Featured Project: Pippa’s Group Nursery

Coordinator Nancy had the chance to meet some of the youngest – and most enthusiastic – members of the Good Food Movement in Lewes District. Read on to find out more about her visit to a Pippa’s Group session at the Landport Community Garden, Lewes.

Swinging open the iconic blue door, Nancy found a group of children hard at work with the support of the staff: planting out herbs in the veg trug, pricking out onion seedlings and sowing seeds for the coming season – not to mention lots of enthusiastic watering.
Pippa’s Group run weekly sessions at Landport Community Garden, and thanks to the hard work of the children and staff, their beds are filled with the different tastes, smells and touches of a wide range of plants.

These sessions, along with regular forest school and time spent hanging out with the resident bantams, are brilliant for creating sensory connections with food for the children, staff and parents alike. Children at Pippa’s Group are encouraged to try new flavours with healthy snacks funded by Lewes District Food Partnership, that also incorporate flavours from the garden.

After an hour spent with Pippa’s Group, you get the feeling that the future of Lewes District’s food systems is in good hands.
