Grow, Cook, Eat, Compost is a series of fun and informal free weekly workshops held in the grounds of Lewes FC on Tuesday mornings. They are currently running from April to mid-July, hopefully with a few more sessions in September and October too.
The aim of the workshops is to provide the local community with practical food-related skills and knowledge in a fun and relaxed way. Participants learn how to grow, cook and compost fruit and vegetables, then enjoy a tasty vegetarian lunch together, sometimes eaten alfresco (weather permitting!).
The sessions are led by a team of local experts in permaculture and nutrition, who share their skills on germinating, harvesting, healthy seasonal cooking and composting.
Lately, sessions have included fresh pasta making with homemade pesto, including rocket from the patch, and chickpea savoury pancakes with an array of toppings, including freshly picked broad beans. Our participants have also taken home some windowsill salad boxes and have planted out a variety of fruits and veg on the patch to harvest over the coming months.
Lewes FC are all about using football as an engine for societal change. Growing, cooking, eating and composting together demonstrates a circular system, which benefits the whole community. We look to reduce our environmental impact while connecting to nature and each other.
The workshops have been running for a few years now and are free to anyone interested in gardening and cooking, thanks to funding from Chalk Cliff Trust and Lewes District Food Partnership.
The team are proud to have developed a wholesome community food project that welcomes and connects a broad range of people, builds wellbeing and reduces isolation. No experience is necessary, and children are welcome to join in too, if accompanied by an adult.
Here is some feedback from our participants:
So enjoying the group, and learning so much about gardening and cooking. It has made Tuesdays really special.
These sessions have got me excited about waking up on a Tuesday morning.
