Guest post: Pressing matters – celebrating the apple harvest with Fitzjohn’s Community Food

Lewes District Food Partnership is delighted to introduce Holly, a student at the University of Sussex, who has joined us for her Global Work Experience placement. Throughout Good Food East Sussex month, Holly has been coming along to different events, workshops and drop-ins. In this guest post, Holly reports back from an afternoon of apple pressing at the Fitzjohn’s Harvest Festival!

During October, one of the main highlights of autumn is getting to experience harvest festivals. By being able to attend FitzJohns harvest festival, I got to experience a Harvest Festival for the first time and found that it was a very hands-on, fun immersive experience. This event involved a meal cooked by volunteers and apple-pressing so we were lucky enough to try our own fresh apple juice. Community engagement was at the heart of this event as everyone and their families was able to come together and enjoy this day.

By using apples that were in season we were able to get all the children who attended involved for a fun experience of apple pressing. This taught them about fresh food and drink and how it can be yummy and healthy.

The hall was also beautifully decorated and was a space where people could come together to enjoy a cooked meal that had the flavours of the autumn.

With huge thanks to Ringmer Community Orchard for sharing their harvest of apples, and to Fitzjohn’s Community Food and Open Door for organising.
