Lewes District Food Partnership Strategy 2025–2028: Building a good local food system

Since 2020, Lewes District Food Partnership has been working to build better local food systems by connecting communities and organisations. We seek to build momentum for a good food movement and support collective action to improve the accessibility, nutritional quality and sustainability of the food we eat and share with each other.

This new three-year strategy is the result of a consultation process that shaped the focus of the next phase of the partnership’s work. We have developed three strategic priorities which together represent a comprehensive vision for a more just, sustainable and nourishing food system (see below).

LDFP's three strategic priorities for 2025–2028

First, by developing dignified, sustainable community food support, we ensure that people experiencing financial hardship have a range of compassionate support options beyond traditional emergency food provision. This foundational work addresses urgent challenges while protecting human dignity.

Building on this, by empowering young people through food we invest in long-term systemic change. By creating positive food experiences, skills and environments for young people, they can become agents of transformation, developing healthier relationships with food and challenging existing food systems.

Our third priority, developing a good food culture, brings these efforts together. By creating infrastructure, opportunities and a strong local identity around food, we transform individual experiences into collective action. This builds community resilience, supports local economies and ensures access to good food for all.

This strategy is accompanied by an action plan to make these aims a reality. It will be reviewed and refreshed each year to ensure that it reflects any changes and opportunities that arise.

We believe that while the scale of the challenges we face, whether it be the cost-of-living, public health, or climate crises, shaping food systems for the better can play a critical part in achieving multiple positive outcomes for people, places and the planet.

In this next phase of LDFP, we will continue working with our local, regional and national partners and networks to advance knowledge and practice and find new opportunities to make a difference through food.

“The Lewes District Food Partnership’s strategy is an important step forward in addressing the public health challenges faced by our communities. It promotes a healthier, more sustainable food system that reflects the strength and values of the district. By placing dignity, health, and sustainability at the heart of the local food system, the strategy offers practical, long-term solutions to food insecurity, while supporting local growers and reducing environmental impact. Crucially, it empowers residents – especially young people – to grow, cook and enjoy nutritious food, helping to build a more connected, resilient and inclusive food future.”
– Darrell Gale, Director of Public Health for East Sussex

“LDFP has already demonstrated its ability to make a real difference, and this strategy takes that work to the next level. By championing a joined-up, community-focused approach, LDFP is not only shaping the future of food in Lewes District but also setting an example for others to follow. Lewes District Council is proud to support this vital work.”

– Emily O’Brien, Cabinet Member for Climate, Nature and Food Systems, Lewes District Council

“In this three-year strategy and action plan, Lewes District Food Partnership presents a clear vision for enhancing the health and wellbeing of people in our local area through food.”
– Penny Shimmin, Chief Executive, Sussex Community Development Association
