Every year, tonnes of perfectly good food goes to waste. While we can all do more to waste less food, recycling the food we can’t east is another simple step that makes a real difference.
That’s the message at the heart of Bin Today, Beans Tomorrow!, a new short film created by three young filmmakers from South Malling Community Primary School in Lewes.
As part of a filmmaking course at Depot, pupils Arthur, Tove and Edith have produced a fun and engaging film encouraging local people to use Lewes District Council’s free food waste collection service.
Small Actions Can make a big difference
When food waste is thrown into the general rubbish bin, valuable resources are lost.
But when it’s collected separately, it can be turned into renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser, helping to reduce waste and support a more circular economy.
Its a simple action that many of us can take at home, yet currently less that one in four households across Lewes District use their food waste caddy each week.
Projects like this show how young people can inspire all of us to think differently about the choices we make every day.
Food waste starts long before the bin
One of the Lewes District Food Partnership’s priorities is helping people reduce food waste.
Planning meals, storing food properly and finding creative ways to use leftovers all help us save money and reduce the environmental impact of the food we buy.
For the food we can’t avoid wasting, things like tea bags, eggshells vegetable peelings and coffee grounds, recycling them through the weekly food waste collection means those resources can still be put to good use and stops your general waste bin from smelling horrible!

The film will be shared with schools across Lewes and screened before family films at Depot throughout the coming month.
