Seaford Head school chose to use Healthy Eating week to promote a healthier lunch menu and provide other healthy food activities to raise awareness about good food and healthy diets.
During a week in June on the Wednesday and Thursday after school , Gemma Mcfarlane set up a fruit stall offering every student a free piece of fruit on their way home. The fruit was kindly provided by the school food catering company – Chartwells. Apples, bananas and satsumas went down very well with most of the students happily taking a piece to eat. It was an easy way to give the students one of their ‘5 a day’.
The school staff know how important it is for the students to have a sound knowledge of good food. The school was recently awarded a small grant from the LDFP to create a larger vegetable garden with help from Sharing Skills CIC. With challenges to the site such as the close proximity to the sea and the neighbouring foxes digging up everything they had planted, they are using part of the grant to build a polytunnel which will also prolong the growing season. Perhaps in the future the school can provide its own food for regular food sharing events.
